- W4313385135 abstract "Quadriceps plasty may be considered mainly to address quadriceps shortening. However, analysis of the reported methods reveals the main component of these quadriceps plasty procedures is soft tissue release instead of quadricep lengthening. The mostly reported related procedures should be Judet quadriceps plasty and Thompson’s quadriceps plasty. In Judet quadriceps plasty, quadriceps release is performed through a long incision on the lateral side of the thigh. In some modifications to Judet procedure, additional incisions are made on the medial side of the knee and at the groin [1]. No special lengthening component is included in the Judet procedure. In the Thompson procedure, a long incision is made along the anterior midline of the distal thigh and the knee [2]. The feature of the Thompson procedure is the removal of the rectus intermedius, along with the release of the vastus medialis and lateralis. The quadriceps plasty technique developed by Zhao J was reported in 2006 [3] and 2007 [4] and included in the latest versions of Campbell’s Operative Orthopedics [5]. The main feature of Zhao quadricep plasty is that it is performed through a small incision at the anterolateral side of the distal thigh, with overlapping lengthening Z-plasty of the rectus femoris and vastus intermedius as the main component. In Zhao quadriceps plasty, the vastus intermedius is not removed and used as a main force-passing structure for the rectus femoris and vastus lateralis. When compared with Judet and Thompson procedures, Zhao plasty is far less invasive. Zhao quadriceps plasty is designed for orthopedic surgeons who are unable or unwilling to use the arthroscopy-assisted knee release techniques [6]. Although it is named quadriceps plasty, the main objectives of this procedure are tissue releases (Table 62.1). Because of the development of arthroscopic knee release techniques, we currently always combine Zhao quadriceps plasty with the arthroscopic knee release technique to obtain the best results." @default.
