- W4313398506 abstract "A newly designed heat-resistant Al-8mass%Mn-2mass%Cr alloy (Al-8Mn-2Cr) was fabricated using a laser-based powder bed fusion (PBF-LB). The Vickers hardness of the Al-8Mn-2Cr PBF-LB samples drastically increased after aging heat treatments, and the aged samples exhibited excellent high-temperature strengths at ≥250 °C. Both the as-built and aged samples possessed coarse columnar crystal grains with a strong texture of 〈001〉 parallel to the stacking direction. The manganese and chromium solutes in the as-built samples were supersaturated in an α-Al phase owing to the rapid solidification by laser melting. Most manganese and chromium supersaturated in the α-Al solid solution remained even after aging, although they were precipitated partially into the Al6Mn and Al7Cr phases at cell boundaries. The quantitative analysis of the strengths based on the microstructural observation demonstrated that the dominant reinforcement factors for both the as-built and aged Al-8Mn-2Cr PBF-LB samples were solid-solution strengthening by supersaturated manganese and chromium and grain boundary strengthening. Dispersion strengthening by the Al6Mn and Al7Cr precipitations through the Orowan mechanism was additionally effective in the aged samples. Moreover, the coarse columnar crystal grains with a strong texture might suppress creep-like grain boundary sliding at ≥250 °C, thus preventing deterioration in the high-temperature strengths." @default.
