- W4313442838 abstract "For any dental student interested in pursuing a career in oral and maxillofacial surgery (OMS), perhaps the biggest barrier to overcome is passing the Comprehensive Basic Science Examination (CBSE), a 200-question multiple choice test written by the National Board of Medical Examiners designed to prepare medical students for the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Step 1. 1 NBME for OMS ApplicantsAmerican Association of oral and maxillofacial surgeons. https://www.aaoms.org/education-research/dental-students/nbme-for-oms-applicantsDate accessed: June 1, 2022 Google Scholar Prior to having the CBSE as a requirement for OMS residency applications, board scores from National Board Dental Examination (NBDE) were considered as a benchmark to compare applicants across all dental schools. However, beginning January 1, 2012, the NBDE transitioned to a pass/fail grading criterion. 2 Waldschmidt D.M. Update on the national board dental examinations (Part I and Part II). Joint commission on national dental Examinations. https://www.mouthhealthy.org/∼/media/ADA/Education%20and%20Careers/Files/adea_nbde_update.ashxDate accessed: June 1, 2022 Google Scholar Following this announcement, the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS) decided that starting with the 2013-2014 application cycle, the CBSE would replace the NBDE as a benchmark tool to compare applicants across dental schools. The National Board of Medical Examiners announced that the USMLE Step 1 score would transition to a pass/fail outcome starting January 26, 2022. 3 USMLE step 1 transition to pass/fail only score reporting. United States medical licensing examination. https://www.usmle.org/usmle-step-1-transition-passfail-only-score-reportingDate accessed: June 1, 2022 Google Scholar The same applied to the CBSE, which has transitioned to a score report that indicates the likelihood of passing the USMLE Step 1. The CBSE also gives an estimated score and score range. From these score reports, students can see how they performed relative to their peers and can identify the relative strengths and weaknesses in their medical knowledge. For dental students, the CBSE is an important determinant of whether an applicant will receive an interview based on initial screening, and the score is often highly considered for programs with medical school admission involvement. Some MD-integrated OMS residency programs have a CBSE cutoff score of 67 (∼194) set by the medical school, which is the minimum USMLE Step 1 passing score (Table 1).
