- W4313443695 abstract "Effective smoke extraction strategy for a model high-rise building fire is developed using large eddy simulation method in fire dynamics simulator (FDS). Physics-based models have been used for finding out the effectiveness of exhaust fans for smoke extraction. A case study is presented for a fire accident on the second floor of a twenty-story high-rise building. To study the worst case, elevators and sprinklers are assumed to be inactive. It was noticed that natural ventilation may not be sufficient to extract all the smoke produced in the event of a fire. Installation of exhaust fans is necessary to maintain visibility above the critical level in the staircase. Various simulations are performed to find out the optimum location, size and capacity of exhaust fans required so that safe evacuation of all the occupants is possible before the visibility drops below a critical level. A correlation between flow rate and visibility is also proposed for the current case which can be used to predict the flow rate of exhaust fans required for a particular visibility level. Further numerical studies and validation with experiments are required to develop a generalized model depending upon the building type, fire load and occupant characteristics." @default.
