• W4313443966 abstract "This paper analyzes the impact of a unique set of institutional ecosystem factors on the innovation propensity of firms in some of the most important middle-income countries of the world. As these middle-income countries embrace innovation as growth levers, it is pertinent to analyze the impact of emerging institutional policies on innovation strategies adopted by firms in these countries. In this study, we focus on the G20 block of nations, and among the G20, we further focus our attention on all the permanent members which are middle-income economies. To measure the innovation propensity of firms, we have analyzed patent data as our source of analysis, consistent with earlier literature. Although, earlier research has delved into various determinants of innovation propensity including institutional policies; however, their focus has mostly been around macro-economic factors, e.g., GDP or specific institutional policies, e.g., subsidies, awareness, etc. Little work has been done to analyze from a holistic institutional ecosystem perspective. Hence, to address this research gap, we adopt a more holistic view by considering institutional ecosystem as a whole. The uniqueness of this study is that we investigate causality between innovation propensity and GDP as well as the overall institutional ecosystem in these middle-income economies, which is an aggregation of various domestic rights, laws, policies, awareness levels and many other factors in each of these emerging economies, and not just few specific institutional factors. Based on longitudinal data across ten years, our study provides evidence that innovation propensity is positively impacted by the institutional ecosystem considered as a whole across all the middle-income economies in the G20 block of nations." @default.
