- W4313444210 abstract "Parenteral iron supplementation may improve oxidative status through activation of antioxidant defences. To compare the short-term effect of parenteral iron supplementation on the oxidative status of patients with chronic heart failure (CHF) and iron deficiency (ID). A double-blind three arms randomized control trial, into three groups: intravenous (IV) iron sucrose, intramuscular (IM) iron polymaltose hydroxide complex and placebo (normal saline) in a 1:1:1 ratio. Required doses for iron supplementation by using Ganzoni's formula, were administered on days 0 and 14 for 4 weeks. Antioxidant markers were catalase and peroxidase, glutathione (GSH) and the ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP). Malondialdehyde (MDA) and nitric oxide (NO) were oxidant markers. We enrolled 45 patients with CHF and ID. Through the IV route, the intervention globally improved antioxidant defences: an increase in catalase activity by −1 [−2.25–0.1] μmolH2O2/min/mL and an increase in antioxidant capacity (P = 0.515) and GSH (P = 0.180) concentration. However, we found a decrease in peroxidase activity (P = 0,038). Using the IM route, the treatment reduced antioxidant markers: a decrease in peroxidase activity (P = 0.753). A further finding was the reduction of the antioxidant capacity (P = 0.799) and GSH (P = 0.109) concentration. Concerning oxidant parameters, the supplementation increased the NO concentration in both IV (P = 0.021) and IM route (P = 0,080). Further, a different effect was observed on the MDA concentration with a reduction of its concentration in both groups (P = 0.591 and P = 0.686). There is an improvement in oxidative status in IV iron supplementation of CHF patients." @default.
