- W4313444829 abstract "William Whiston became Cambridge’s third Lucasian Professor of Mathematics in 1702, succeeding Isaac Newton. Before that, he had published the first full-length treatment of Newtonian natural philosophy in his New theory of the earth (1696). While at Cambridge, he collaborated with Roger Cotes in the university’s first course on experimental philosophy. But Whiston’s promising academic career came to an end in 1710 when he was expelled from his chair for dissenting on the Trinity. Undeterred, Whiston remade himself in London as a natural philosophical entrepreneur, selling popular Newtonian texts, delivering coffee-house lectures on mathematics and, for two decades, teaching experimental philosophy courses with instrument-maker Francis Hauksbee, Jr. Through the use of such testimonies as newspaper advertisements, this paper recreates Whiston’s efforts to establish himself in the metropolis as he moved from a fixed university income to operate in the dynamic yet financially precarious world of public science. This paper also considers his audience, evaluates his income and assesses the relative success of the popularising endeavours of a man who was doubly unemployable as priest and professor. Finally, this paper touches on the ways in which Whiston operated both literally and figuratively in the shadow of the Royal Society." @default.
