- W4313453000 abstract "Emerging micropollutants are threatening the quality of natural waters sources. Land disposal of wastewaters from various sources without adequate treatment is responsible for this predicament. The grim reality is that the present-day water quality standards lack a comprehensive framework of criteria for many of the pharmaceuticals. The introduction of new drugs into the market day by day owing to the rise in the identification of new diseases is a cause of concern. It has been found that conventional treatment methods lack the efficacy to deal with the variety and quantity of the pharmaceuticals in wastewater. Biodegradation is a possible solution owing to its sustainability although complete mineralization was found to be difficult. Meanwhile, photocatalytic degradation of pharmaceuticals was being studied on the other side. Recent advancements in using both these processes in tandem with each other had opened up new possibilities for an environmentally sustainable treatment aspect which can completely mineralize pharmaceuticals. Photocatalysis as a posttreatment step to biodegradation was found to enhance the overall degradation. Both processes can help the wastewaters of different sources meet land disposal standards and curb the rising menace of ubiquitous emerging micropollutants." @default.
