- W4313462812 abstract "Population ageing and international migration are hallmarks of the 21st century, yet are often not concurrently studied. With over 91 million Indians aged over 60 years and with Indians being the world's largest diaspora (17.5 million), India is at the epicentre of both of these important phenomena. In this chapter, we draw on evidence from contemporary Australia, where Indian migrants are the fastest growing migrant community. The chapter deploys the concept of ‘situational irony’ to highlight the real life asymmetries of power, mobility, and access that are embedded in policies and processes. We discuss practices of transnational care when older Indians remain in India and younger members migrate, as well as, practices of transnational care when older Indians migrate in later life to be with younger members. In exploring these scenarios, we highlight ironic and unequal topographies of care with regard to who cares for whom and under what circumstances, with a focus on employment opportunities, notions of care, and citizenship policies in India and Australia." @default.
