Australia’s pastoral properties and regions are recognisably cultural landscapes because of their diverse and entangled histories. After 1884, pastoral leases were redefined as either Leasehold or Resumed areas, the latter available for selection through a purchasing system. The landscape around the ephemeral Lake Victoria, which was acquired to construct a water storage facility in 1927, was regarded as marginal pastoral land. Pastoral cultural landscapes are a palimpsest of layers and values that commonly include the topography, water courses, soils and vegetation, as well as Aboriginal pathways – some of which were followed by European explorers and some became the routes of stock droving tracks. The transformation of Australian Indigenous landscapes by settlers and their stock has resulted in constructed, designed, and continuing pastoral cultural landscapes." @default.
