- W4313559971 abstract "Endophytic composition is known to be shaped by various extraneous factors like host genotype and edaphic factors. Very little information is available about this relationship in endemic medicinal plants like Zingiber zerumbet (L) Smith (Zz), a perennial rhizomatous wild ginger congener, with reported resistance to Pythium mediated soft-rot disease, known to seriously affect productivity of spice crop, ginger. With studies documenting higher content of principal secondary metabolite, zerumbone in Zz accessions from Kasaragod district in Kerala (India), phytochemical profiling was undertaken for accessions collected from five locations in the district. Though significant variations in zerumbone (88.44–92.88%) was undetected, study identified variations in composition of other metabolites across accessions like α.-Caryophyllene (2.29–5.27%), Fenchene (0–3.36%), Humulene oxide (0–1.79%), β-eudesmene (0–3.37%) and Bishomofarnesene (0–0.32%). Physico-chemical characterization of rhizospheric soil revealed variations in organic carbon content (1.02–2.42%); macronutrient [phosphorous (P): 9.85–38.58 ppm; Potassium (K): 173.07–431.27 ppm and Magnesium (Mg): 184.67–430 ppm] and micronutrient (Mn: 6.59–51.1 ppm; Zn: 2.38–26.5 ppm; and Fe: 39.2–144.67 ppm) content in soil collected from five locations. Considering variations in analyzed edaphic factors, accessions from the five locations constituted source for isolating a total of 44 endophytic isolates which were categorized into 17 operational taxonomic units (OTU) following morphological, biochemical and molecular characterization. 16S rRNA sequencing and phylogenetic analysis revealed majority of Zz endophytes as belonging to γ- Proteobacteria and Firmicutes phyla. Endophytes isolated in present study based on rhizome phytochemistry and edaphic factors constitute potential resource for development of biocontrol agents (BCAs) towards managing soil-borne soft-rot disease, caused by Pythium spp." @default.
