- W4313576021 abstract "Choledochal cyst is essentially a dilated segment of the bile duct. The prevalence rates of choledochal cysts are much higher in the Asian population compared to Western populations. Its exact etiology remains incompletely understood; however, an anomalous pancreaticobiliary union and subsequent reflux of pancreatic contents into the biliary tree are thought to play a role. Clinical signs/symptoms can vary but most of the children present with at least two features of the classic triad of symptoms, abdominal pain, palpable abdominal mass, and jaundice. Diagnosis is typically accomplished using multimodality imaging techniques including computed tomography, magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography, and ultrasonography. Appropriate management consists of complete cyst excision followed by restoration of biliary enteric continuity. Minimally invasive choledochal cyst resection in the pediatric population has demonstrated acceptable outcomes. Prognosis is generally excellent. However, malignancy risk is higher in choledochal cyst patients than in the general population even after complete surgical excision." @default.
