In anthropological and sociological studies of pilgrimage, there has been no shortage of talk about the journey's aftermath. And few, if any, contemporary pilgrims run the risk of never returning home from long voyages, as was the case centuries ago. In other words, across the world pilgrims today generally share a need to negotiate what comes after the trip: returnees incorporate new actions and attitudes or show and arrange photos or give gifts and blessings upon return. These acts of memory making often become integral to the experience of being at a sacred site. It is therefore notable how comparatively little social scientific research has evaluated these aftermaths in a sustained or systematic way. This chapter focuses on possible reasons why and outlines some of the patterns in studies that do evaluate post-trip experiences. Focusing on pilgrims, objects and sites, it aims to spark cross-disciplinary conversation and engage ideas for new research." @default.
