- W4313641570 abstract "Psychiatric literature about when instances of voice hearing should be regarded as religiously inflected psychopathology and when they should be regarded as genuine religious experiences tend to presuppose that a person's experience can only be either psychopathological or else a genuine religious experience. This chapter evaluates three ways in which both might be the case. First, the “mysterium tremendum” view suggests that God may cause psychopathology in the process of communicating with someone, reflecting the idea that encountering the divine is or can be psychologically dangerous. Second, the “mental openness” view suggests that the propensity for psychosis or pathological voice hearing, and the capacity to hear God's voice, arise from the same kind of “mental openness,” so that someone who hears voices may experience a combination of genuine religious experiences and hallucinations. Third, the “honeysuckle on a broken fence” view indicates that dysfunction or psychopathology may support the work of divine grace in particular ways, so that a person's experience of psychosis may provide conducive conditions for, and be accompanied by, genuine religious experience. Drawing on contextualist accounts of psychopathology, I will argue in favour of the third view and against the first two, pointing to some pastoral and clinical implications of this view." @default.
