- W4313641595 abstract "THE supply of veterinary medicines to Northern Ireland (NI) will continue unhindered after the EU Commission extended a grace period that allows the purchase of animal medicines from elsewhere in the UK. Up to 51 per cent of medicines supplied to NI were at risk of being discontinued from 1 January 2023 when new EU rules, outlined in the NI Protocol, were due to come into effect. However, the grace period will now continue until December 2025, meaning current processes for moving veterinary medicines between Great Britain and NI can continue for now. The EU Commission announced the extension on 19 December following months of lobbying from the UK government and veterinary organisations, and noted that it would ‘give stakeholders ample time to adapt’. EU Commission vice president Maroš Šefčovič tweeted ‘we've listened, understood, [and] acted’ in response to the news. Although all parties involved welcomed the extension, the need for a ‘longer-term, sustainable solution’ remains, according to the BVA and the National Office of Animal Health (NOAH). Responding to the announcement, BVA president Malcolm Morley and NOAH CEO Dawn Howard noted the significant implications for both animal health and welfare and public health had the move not been made. Morley said: ‘We've [BVA] been pressing the UK government and the EU Commission to find a workable solution to this issue [for months]. The extension of the grace period is extremely positive, and we welcome a solution which provides ample time to adapt for future compliance.’ Howard echoed this, saying: ‘This extension will alleviate immediate difficulties due to loss of products; it is most welcome, and is a testament to the veterinary, farming and animal welfare sectors working together to highlight our concerns. “The need for a longer-term, sustainable solution is still vital Speaking to Vet Record in July 2022, the Veterinary Medicines Directorate explained that the use of many established supply chains would no longer be feasible following the end of the grace period, and that the required changes under EU rules would also affect the commercial viability of a number of veterinary products (VR, 23/30 July 2022, vol 191, p 53). The recent extension has prompted some unionist party members to once again call for animal medicines to be removed from the scope of the NI protocol entirely. He said: ‘We should never have been in this position and I have called on numerous occasions – the last being just a month ago – that animal medicines should be removed from the scope of the protocol.’ Democratic Unionist Party environment spokesperson Carla Lockhart said it was ‘unacceptable’ that the EU retained control over the supply of veterinary medicines to NI under the NI Protocol. She said: ‘While clarity would have been welcome earlier, this extension of grace periods is good news in so far as it removes the immediate threat to supply. ‘However, what it does not do is solve the fundamental issue here. That is the unacceptable situation whereby the NI Protocol hands power to the EU over our veterinary medicines.’" @default.
