- W4313651198 abstract "The current scenario and projected climate driven impacts on wetland ecosystems have highlighted an alarming situation, concerning risk to the present and future services of these ecosystems to society and environment. There is ample evidence of natural and anthropogenically induced impacts of climate change on wetlands, from polar/terrestrial regions to coastal-tropical marine environments. Spore/pollen from the dated sediments under lacustrine environments proved to be an important natural proxy to record past monsoon and climatic shifts during the different geological timeframes. Palynological analyses helped not only with insights into past changes in biodiversity but also aided in the understanding of climate change at a particular site at a particular time in the geological past. Recent remote-sensing data on the current status of wetlands in remote locations of India and review of the palnological analysis carried out from the surface and dated sub-surface sediments from the diversified geographical sites of high altitudes like the Himalaya, showed a broad scenario of temporal variation of flora in and around the study sites in relation to climate change, human impact, and other controlling factors. The pollen assemblage of a particular site is characterized by pollen from local (plants growing at the study sites) as well as extra local elements (plants growing near the sites). Palynological analyses from surface samples provide a catalog of modern vegetation representing present climatic conditions, while a good amount of pollen (both local and extra local) in sediments has indicated higher biodiversity in and around the study site under amelioration of climate (i.e., toward more moist and warm climatic conditions). Alternatively, variation of local taxa, especially aquatic and marshy pollen, show more local biodiversity with changes in the of hydrological regime of the area under changing environments. Based on this principle, past biodiversity of several sites from the Himalayan region is presented in relation to the vegetation and broad climate inferred." @default.
