- W4313787612 abstract "This article reviews South Africa’s relations with the Arab North African countries of Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya and Egypt from the formal establishment of the apartheid system in South Africa in 1948 to the present, considering the particular political and economic interests of the respective minority government in Pretoria, which came to an end in 1994, and the African National Congress (ANC) from its liberation struggle through its tenure as the dominant party in South African political life. It will also examine how these interactions have related to both African and world politics. For South Africa’s apartheid government, interaction with or consideration of the politics in North African countries was largely connected to membership in the Commonwealth, at least until 1961. Afterwards, during the period of decolonisation on the African continent, the North African states were mostly hostile towards apartheid South Africa. In 1962, Nelson Mandela, leader of the ANC, took a trip that included North African states providing funding and/or military training for his organisation’s members. Years later, after he was freed from prison and subsequently elected president of South Africa, he would visit those countries many times – as would his successors. Given the respective histories of South Africa and Algeria and the backgrounds of their leaders being connected with political organisations engaged in liberation struggles, it is not surprising that the two countries have developed a strategic relationship. Mandela also had very close ties with Libya under the rule of Muammar Qaddafi. Relations with Tunisia have been fairly stable, while those with Egypt and Morocco have fluctuated as both countries have attempted to assert their influence in African continental affairs. Also, in the case of Morocco, South Africa’s distaste for that country’s annexation of Western Sahara has affected relations. As post-apartheid South Africa is the hegemon in the Southern African Development Community (SADC), most of its trade in Africa is with member states of that organisation. Unfortunately, close political ties have not translated into continued increased trade and foreign investment, but South Africa continues attempting to enhance that sector of relations." @default.
