- W4313886076 abstract "When studying the original correspondence between Wilhelm Bode and “his” private collectors, such as the prince Johann II. Liechtenstein and Rodolphe Kann, one gets the impression that Bode acted as a universal advisor – he often took upon himself the role of a dealer and connoisseur and in many instances also acted as their private curator, researcher and writer. In general, Bode cultivated such relationships with collectors as a way to encourage donations to the Kaiser-Friedrich-Museum (now Bode Museum), in Berlin. The present essay, however, focuses on showcasing how Bode used his influence to benefit other than Berlin’s art collections. Taking the example of the Czech art collector Adalbert Lanna, this essay is based on a thorough analysis of their previously unpublished correspondence from the years 1885–1894, preserved at Zentralarchiv in Berlin and in the Archives of the Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague. This correspondence reveals that Bode was not only helping Lanna acquire artworks for his personal collection but that he also used his extensive knowledge and influence on the art market to help find artworks and facilitate donations for public art collections – particularly the Society of Patriotic Friends of the Arts in Prague (later transformed into National Gallery in Prague) and the Prague’s Museum for Decorative Arts." @default.
