The representative works of the Renaissance depicting an ideal society, More’s Utopia and Bacon’s New Atlantis represent two conflicting tendencies of the Renaissance. The ideal society described by More is a communist society where private property is prohibited, and it is a thoroughly controlled society where individual freedom is not allowed. Utopia is a small-scale agricultural society and it’s life is similar to medieval monastic life, with communal meals. On the other hand, Bacon’s ideal society is an affluent kingdom with abundant resources due to the development of science and technology. Atlantis is the image of a commercialized city in Italy where individuals accumulated wealth through trade and were allowed to express their individuality. Thomas More describes a closed agricultural society that prohibits individual freedom, and Francis Bacon describes a scientific commercial society that allows individual freedom as an ideal society. Because the two found the standards of the ideal society in opposite places, they revealed such different views on individualistic life and freedom. More suggested ancient values and ways of life, and Bacon suggested future ways of life that will develop through scientific exploration as standards for an ideal society." @default.
