- W4315491344 abstract "The author seeks to measure the frequency of stepfamilies with statistical methods and observe structural variations in the Lutheran urban community of Pressburg (Bratislava, Slovakia), which had a German-speaking citizenry of circa 5,000 people. He also investigates whether the half-orphans in stepfamilies, fulfilling collective fears embodied in fairy tales and laws, were actually disadvantaged from the perspective of their access to family resources (including emotional care) compared to their parents’ common children, that is, their younger half-siblings. By comparing the “social success” (the indices of which include career, marriage, and social status) of adult children from previous marriages with the social status of their biological parents and the social success of the younger half-siblings, the analysis shows that it was unusual in this urban milieu to draw distinctions between stepchildren and children of remarried parents in the division of family wealth and resources. The differences in opportunity were determined rather by gender, not by whether a given child was from a first or second marriage. The vulnerability of burgher children who had lost a parent was diminished by the support provided in the rearranged family headed by a stepfather." @default.
