- W4315697412 abstract "The problem of transliteration of Arabic words is a vexed one. There are several academically respectable systems which make it possible for the instructed reader to transliterate back into the original Arabic spelling. Such systems are of little value to the ordinary reader – President Nasser is recognized with difficulty as Jamal ‘abd ul Nasir. The problem is further complicated when people are dealing with nineteenth-century history. At the beginning of the century, Persian, Arabic and Turkish were much intermingled and official Turkish used many Arabic or Persian words. Moreover, it altered their pronunciadon. The European spelling of names, originally Arabic, would often be taken by ear from a Turkish speaker; it would be written down differently by a Frenchman and by an Englishman, differently again by a German. Muhammad ’Ali in his time was generally written as Mohamed Aly, somedmes in the Turkish manner as Mehmet Ali." @default.
