- W4315706462 abstract "This chapter asks questions about the direction day-to-day psychoanalytic practice is taking, using the North American “relational turn” as a reference point and setting it beside both the more traditional North American approach of the 1950s and Freud’s published ideas. The author argues that every psychoanalyst must make four essential suppositions, whether known explicitly or not, if the treatment conducted is to be psychoanalytic. What is it that is unconscious in a session? What is it that is repeated to produce the problems patients have? What goes on between the two in a session? What is communicated to a patient to make psychoanalysis work? Using this framework, the relational turn in psychoanalysis, which shares features with contemporary developments in practice everywhere, surfaces a fundamentally novel path for the psychoanalytic clinician to take. Thinking of a crossroads, one exit is a technique in which the analyst is life assistant to someone who has been damaged by experience. Another exit is to adopt a much more parsimonious and affectively neutral model. It relies on free association and evenly suspended attention to surface unconscious and unbearable discomfort as a sign of the resisted beliefs that cause repetition. The point is that whatever suppositions are made, they are consequential. Fundamentally, the direction taken at the crossroads depends on how psychoanalysts think they do unconscious inference and how transference and countertransference influence it: how does an analyst know the source of discomfort if it is unconscious? Is this question evaded in current practices of construction?" @default.
