- W4315746540 abstract "A feminist account informed by post-structural questions is used here to consider issues of gender and culture in the area of children’s ‘competence’. Competence is defined broadly to refer to both adequacy of performance and good use of talents. Early debates about rates of development for individual children are described in order to raise questions about the sexism and racism of foundational ideas in development. Contemporary work on the development of expertise in children points to the importance of family and school supports rather than individual differences in determining a child’s performance. The recognition of competence as multi-faceted also has implications for the assessment of children. This allows for more acknowledgement of differences between children as positive rather than as deviance to be suppressed." @default.
