- W4316091889 abstract "Milk and its products play important role in enhancing food security among communities who keep livestock and leave in the rural areas of Kenya. Traditionally fermented milk is one of the milk products, which contain live microorganisms (Probiotic) which when consumed in adequate amounts confer health benefits to the host. However, the extent to which children access the health benefits is not known because of limited information on household production and consumption frequency of these milk products in the regions. Available knowledge on production and consumption frequency of traditionally fermented milk products can provide valuable information for targeting specific measures for developing and promoting them as transition foods for young children. The objective of this study therefore, was to establish household production and consumption frequency of one such milk product Mursik, by 1-5 years old children in Uasin Gishu County, Kenya. A cross-sectional study involving 382 Kalenjin households (HHs) was conducted within Kapseret location in August 2013. Structured questionnaires and a focused group discussion (FGD) question guide were the main instruments of data collection. The study employed both quantitative and qualitative methods of data collection. A two-stage sampling method was used to select the villages and households in which questionnaires were administered and data was analyzed using the Statistical Packages for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 16.0 for windows and tested for significance at P < 0.05. Results showed that households with daily production of ≤ 5 litres of fresh milk prepared the greatest share (60%) of mursik. There were significant differences (p< 0.05) between mursik production and the levels of HH fresh milk production, age group (P= 0.035) of respondents in households and mursik production levels (χ2 = 0.1332, p =0.0041) and consumption frequency among children. Households producing > 5 litres of mursik fed their children more frequently (75%) at more than once per day. Although mursik formed an integral part of household food in Kapseret Location only 28% (n=108) of households fed children with it. Therefore, mursik consumption among children should be promoted to improve their health status." @default.
