The aim of the X-ray diffraction experiment is to delineate the molecular organization of the myelin membrane within the intemode. The common goal of light microscopy, electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction (XRD) is to provide a picture of nerve myelin. XRD can be used to uncover structural anomalies in myelin resulting from biochemical defects in myelin proteins and lipids. The use of stabilizing reagents necessitates extrapolating from the visualized structure back to the tissue as it existed before fixation. In the paranodal region the compact myelin opens up to contain cytoplasm, thus defining the lateral or terminal loops. Minor myelin proteins or myelin-associated proteins have a variable phylogenetic distribution. Antibodies have been generated to specific myelin proteins and then exposed for binding to tissue sections." @default.
