- W4316500512 abstract "Just over 150 years ago Professor Theodor Schwann published his treatise on the cell theory. In the 1950s B.B. Geren brought attention to the Schwann cell by showing that its plasma membrane was continuous with the myelin sheath. Polyclonal and monoclonal antibodies are available which recognize key protein antigens of peripheral nerve development. At the molecular level, myelination begins when the genes for myelin proteins and for enzymes synthesizing myelin lipids are activated. Presumably the loss of axonal signals was sufficient to depress the synthesis of myelin lipids. Schwann cells are usually obtained from developing or adult rodent sciatic nerves. Although the influence of the axon on Schwann cell proliferation and myelination has been a subject of intense investigations, less attention has been given to the influences Schwann cells have on their axons. Most changes that follow removal of the axon are a straight reversal of axon-dependent events occurring during normal development in vivo." @default.
