- W4317367714 abstract "Abstract A Genealogy of the Good and Critique of Hubris takes inspiration from Immanuel Kant’s inquiry into the question, “Is the human race constantly progressing?” This book asks the question, “Are we, as social welfare agents, morally progressing in our efforts at administering social welfare to those in need?” To answer this question, this work offers a substantive analysis of the dominant Discourses on social welfare in the United States, from colonial times to the present. It is a genealogical analysis based on the approach developed by Michel Foucault. Such an analysis examines the formulation of what is considered an effective intervention within different historical eras and how this meaning arises from the particular conditions of that era. Once fully described and understood, this analysis offers the opportunity to explore areas of knowledge that are subjugated within the dominant Discourse and, hence, can lead to moral blind spots. For example, one of the moral blind spots of the present era of professional social work is the propensity at times for social workers to inadvertently embrace the role of social control agent rather than that of an agent for social change. It is hoped that the insights generated from this historical investigation can serve to help social workers maintain an awareness of present moral blind spots in the practice of social work and thus avoid them." @default.
