- W4317368844 abstract "Extract Floridawater II.1 A doubling, a repetition. Similar, but not identical. Immersed in bluegreen waters. Ablutions. The Wacissa River. It bubbles up from large limestone springs moving south through cypress forests, then sweetbay, maple, hickory, sweetgum. Life erupts above and below it. Aquatic birds and animals are abundant. Kingfishers, alligators, bald eagles, water moccasins, crayfish. Enter its waters and one enters a domain of fish and river plants. I was in a swamp and I did the photographs with me in the water. And so there’s a strength in the posture, but there’s also a vulnerability. You’re very aware of the environment, and you’re not sure if the character is in danger, or if they are the villain. So there’s a little bit of everything. (Allison Janae Hamilton, quoted in Ellis 2021) The Wacissa is also infused with human history. The intersection of river and sea offers a land rich in resources. The original inhabitants settled in the region fourteen thousand years ago, carving tools from the chert easily found along the route of the Wacissa. Their ceremonial and shell mounds dot the river. From at least 1000 ce a group of Indigenous people lived in the region who farmed and prospered from the riches of the land and waters. Called Apalachee by the Spanish, they were a large community of about fifty thousand at the time of Ponce de León’s arrival in 1513 in what came to be called Florida. Spain sent missionaries into the region, and by the end of the seventeenth century missions dotted the route of the Wacissa and beyond: San Antonio de Bacuqua, San Luis de Apalachee, San Lorenzo de Ivitachuco, Santa María de Ayubale, San Martin de Tomole, San Miguel de Asile, La Concepcion de Ayubale, San Francisco de Oconi, San Juan de Aspalaga, San Joseph de Ocuya. The missionaries brought with them new lifeways along with new infectious diseases that resulted in large losses of Indigenous communities both within the land they called La Florida and beyond. Apalachee and the Spanish missionaries had complex relationships but nonetheless lived together until the early eighteenth century, when Colonel James Moore along with eighty British and fifteen hundred Creek soldiers attacked the area, killing or enslaving many Apalachee and forcing the relocation of others. The Adams-Onis Treaty signed in 1819, not long after the raids, granted the land then referred to as Spanish Florida to the United States." @default.
