- W4317369008 abstract "Extract As a young academic I felt I had a handle on the intricacies of American evangelicalism. My dissertation addressed the impact of evangelical renewal movements (ERMs) in mainline denominations. Yet I was unaware of Mark Driscoll and Mars Hill Church when I moved to Seattle in the fall of 2001. Soon after I began teaching at Seattle Pacific University (SPU), I was alerted to Driscoll and his church when the student newspaper published a story about a Bible study Driscoll was leading on campus. The article quoted a student from the Bible study who complained that Driscoll regularly disparaged women and described a godly man as having “a 40-ounce beer in one hand, a slab of meat in the other, and a naked woman (his wife) in front of him.” The article solidified concerns from faculty, administrators, and some students about Driscoll and his teaching. Subsequently, Driscoll was asked to stop leading the weekly group. The reasons given by the school’s administration for Driscoll’s ouster were vague. The Dean of the Chapel said university policy wasn’t followed, while the Dean of Students reported that university policy wasn’t clear. Students who attended Mars Hill Church objected to the decision to stop the Bible study, complaining that SPU administrators and faculty simply didn’t like Driscoll’s style and his teaching on the roles of women. Regardless of the reason, Driscoll’s being asked to leave campus was controversial and polarized much of the student body, a significant number of whom attended Mars Hill Church." @default.
