- W4317371928 abstract "Extract Motivation science’s most practical question is, “How do we motivate people?” This is a frequently asked question, but the controversy lies in how to do this. All eleven contributors warn against relying only on one’s intuition, common sense, and the first thing that comes to mind, especially if it leads to trying to push, persuade, bribe, manipulate, or control others. These approaches either do not work or, worse, produce significant harm. Patall (Essay 8.4) puts it this way: “What is easy is not always what works.” As to what works, the contributors offer three productive pathways to motivate people: ... Create a Motivationally Supportive Environment. Alexander (Essay 8.2), Grolnick (Essay 8.3), Patall (Essay 8.4), Anderman (Essay 8.5), Wentzel (Essay 8.10), Patrick (Essay 8.11), and Vansteenkiste and Soenens (Essay 8.8) all agree: The way to motivate others is to create a motivationally supportive environment. To do this, step one is to take the person’s perspective to deeply understand their needs, interest, values, and self-beliefs. Anderman (Essay 8.5) recommends asking a lot of questions and then using that information to offer a personalized plan of action. Alexander (Essay 8.2) echoes this strategy, emphasizing that step one is to first get to know the person, their background, and their interests. With such personalized knowledge, the teacher can encourage the other’s choice-making and self-direction. For Grolnick (Essay 8.3), motivating others means tapping into their interests, needs, and experiences so that the person can act in ways that fulfill and satisfy these interests and needs. To do this, Grolnick recommends teacher-provided autonomy-support, competence-support, and relatedness-support. Similarly, Patall (Essay 8.4) recommends “stoking the flames of people’s internal forms of motivation.” For Patall, the way to motivate others is to acknowledge that the other person is the ultimate agent when it comes to motivating their behavior, learning, and well-being. Thus, motivating others begins with perspective-taking and continues by offering people opportunities to freely explore their interests, develop their competence, and connect to other people." @default.
