- W4317372261 abstract "Extract It could result in what is being called ‘the biggest mass eviction in the name of conservation, ever’.1 In February 2019, India’s Supreme Court ordered the removal of millions of people from the nation’s forests, such as national parks, tiger reserves, and other wildlife conservation areas—anyone who already had their land claims rejected at the state level would now be dispossessed. The Supreme Court subsequently stayed its decision, but not before it sent shockwaves through indigenous rights networks around the world. If the order stands, the Government of India now has the potential to evict anywhere from two to nine million people from forest lands in the name of tigers, wildlife, and environmental conservation, according to various estimates.2 Meanwhile, around the same time as India’s Supreme Court decision, a major international campaign seeking to protect 30% of the earth’s land and water by 2030 was quickly coalescing. Bringing together powerful players at the United Nations, over fifty national governments, environmentalist groups such as the World Wildlife Fund, organizations like National Geographic Society, and backed by the billionaire Hansjörg Wyss’ Campaign for Nature, this cause has gained widespread popular support on the global stage. As in the Indian case, the aim is to save the planet’s biodiversity—especially its wildlife—from extinction. But one fear is that this might happen at the expense of impoverished rural communities—especially indigenous peoples. Thus, a recent open letter signed by many scholars and activists renowned for their work with communities living in and around protected areas has raised the alarm. Scholars like Arun Agrawal, Dan Brockington, Peter Brosius, Michael Dove, Asmita Kabra, Ashish Kothari, Tania Li, Paige West, and many more, are concerned that this 30x30 approach, as it’s been called, ‘continues the marginalisation of rural people who will be most affected by its measures… ignores decades of research and experience on the social impacts of conservation… [and] fails to appreciate the political contexts in which protected area conservation are embedded’.3 ‘Tribal rights’ groups like Survival International have gone so far as to call the 30x30 campaign ‘the big green lie’, again warning that ‘it would constitute “the biggest land grab in history.” Three hundred million people stand to lose their land and livelihood, many of them tribal and indigenous peoples’.4" @default.
