This chapter emphasizes the benefits for work and well-being from high-quality social relationships and affective commitment—the feeling of pride and sense of belonging in being a member of the organization. The negative effects of thwarted belonging are widespread—whether through poor-quality relationships, ostracism, or calculative commitment—the feeling of being “stuck” in the organization. This chapter considers in depth whether any move toward remote work might compromise the benefits gained from satisfying the need for belonging at work. Finally, we consider research examining why managers think their employees are committed to the organization—whether because managers feel employees want to belong, or have to, and how this affects how managers evaluate and treat their employees." @default.
