- W4317498420 abstract "Natural killer (NK) cells are the major immune effectors known to reduce tumor burden by inducing direct killing or differentiation of a number of different cancer stem cells/undifferentiated or poorly differentiated tumor cells. Differentiated tumor cells, in comparison to their stem-like counterparts, are less capable to grow and metastasize, so NK-induced differentiation leads to tumor growth inhibition and curtailment of tumor metastasis. In this chapter, we present an overview of phenotypic characteristics and functions of NK cells that play a crucial role in targeting tumors, and methodologies to test these characteristics and functions. In addition, we discuss the potential loss of NK functions in cancer patients, and how this loss of NK cell functions could be one of the contributing factors for the induction and progression of cancer. Moreover, we report the methodologies to test the surface and functional characteristics of NK cells. Finally, we discuss the significance of incorporating NK cell function testing as one of the diagnostic approaches to assess the functions of NK cells in high-risk cancer group and in cancer patients, as this assessment could be an ideal approach to optimize treatment strategies." @default.
