- W4317498474 abstract "Chapter 2 introduces some of the key and more widely applied scientific findings for development of human-made reef units and systems, such as how new biomass may be produced and ecosystem services of natural reefs replicated to varying degrees. Such information is essential if the technology is to attain, sustainably, the objectives defined for these structures and also anticipate and address emerging situations. This information is of interest in its own right, as it contributes to basic ocean science and also as it offers wider interests a portal to the fascinating undersea environment. Representative research methods, innovative studies, and synthesis of findings are drawn from numerous and very diverse natural and social science disciplines. Inasmuch as purpose-built (“artificial”) reefs are sometimes defined according to how they are designed to in some way replicate the ecological and physico-chemical features, structure, performance, and ecosystem services of natural reefs, so the ecology and human utilization of three-dimensional hard-bottom systems such as coral and other living reefs is characterized as a baseline for instruction, emulation, and comparison. Questions concerning “reef effects” and “equivalency” of human-made structure (sometimes cast in terms of “attraction vs. production” of biomass) are addressed." @default.
