- W4317516650 abstract "Human-made reefs are used increasingly, but not necessarily evaluated, as tools in the ocean management toolbox. They may serve simply as passive “sleeping policemen” to protect important seafloor habitats or in more complex roles as viable and dynamic sources for “spillover” of marine species recruits from protected to wider areas for biological conservation. This chapter presents a larger context for their use by managers in seascapes of the world, invariably at smaller spatial scales (e.g., <football field size) than typically exist for other marine infrastructure. Yet, the burgeoning development of secondary structures such as breakwaters and energy production platforms warrants careful promulgation of best marine spatial planning practices for their unintended yet significant ecological and socioeconomic roles in the ocean environment. The integration and synergy of research and management are described, including consideration and engagement of stakeholders representing fishing, recreational, investment, and conservation interests. Primary (intentional) purpose-built structures are nested, modestly, in larger practices of ecosystem management and international ocean governance. Two major management situations, for fisheries and for biological conservation, are emphasized." @default.
