Disability scholar Tanya Titchkosky critiques the way that some people within social justice movements have employed disability-related metaphors that imply the lives of people with disabilities are somehow lesser than those of TABs (2017, 270). In describing colonialism and colonizers as “blind” and suggesting that some men are “deaf to gender distortions,” Titchkosky asserts that activists seek to “diagnose” social justice problems so they can be cured (271–72). But these metaphors also marginalize people with disabilities by reinforcing the idea that disability stands for brokenness and an unacceptable state of embodiment. At the same time, Titchkosky acknowledges that metaphor can be helpful since it “is a form of social action; it gives meaning to people and events by expressing them in relation to each other through a comparison” (275–76). While such turns of phrase can be unwittingly discriminatory, Titchkosky argues metaphor has the potential to reshape modes of thought, be “a place where we nurture the capacity to let new understandings arise,” and allow people to think creatively about body variability (277)." @default.
