- W4317632841 abstract "A method for characterizing the freestream of hypersonic wind tunnels is presented. A database of computational simulation results obtained for the wind tunnel nozzle and test section is required. Measurements of two independent freestream flow properties obtained during a wind tunnel test are used to curve fit the database and solve for the nozzle reservoir state time history. The computational database is then used along with the obtained reservoir state to determine the unmeasured freestream flow properties during the test-time. Measurements obtained at the Caltech T5 reflected shock tunnel have been used to validate this method for two nominally 8 MJ/kg and two nominally 16 MJ/kg stagnation enthalpy shots. The measured freestream in T5 was found to be unique where there is only one reservoir state which reproduces any given measured data point. Results for multiple options of utilizing the available measurements with this characterization method are presented. These results show that for each T5 shot there is a portion of the test-time when each characterized freestream option is in agreement with each other and is within the error bars of all available measurements. This has implications for computational model validation studies using measurements obtained in ground test facilities where comparisons on a per time basis are now possible. The portion of the test-time when there is poor agreement is analyzed by simulating the flow with helium, which is the driver gas used in the T5 shock tunnel. If the flow is uniformly contaminated with helium this can produce a large drop in freestream temperature even in the presence of a nearly constant or increasing flow velocity." @default.
