- W4317647554 abstract "Chapter one examines an eclectic array of visual works from the mid-nineteenth through the twenty-first centuries that imagine the train as a tool of settler colonialism. I argue that nineteenth-century landscape paintings by John Gast and Frances Flora Bond, the early twentieth-century travel advertisements for the Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad, and the twenty-first century production reel for Jerry Bruckheimer Films make the railroad the centerpiece of a visual logic that I call railroad creationism, which was designed to erase the influence and presence of Native Americans on the lands of the “frontier” (in the case of the landscape paintings) or to commodify the Indian by conflating the figure with the land and the train itself (in the case of railroad advertisements). Bong Joon-ho’s 2013 film Snowpiercer and Jaque Fragua’s Graffiti on a Train series resist the spatializing and settler-colonial logics that the railroad imposes." @default.
