- W4317648203 abstract "In The Human Condition, Hannah Arendt notes that the language of the Romans “to live” and “to be among men” were synonyms. What does it mean to be “among” others? What sort of political authority (if any) follows from this particular preposition? This chapter investigates the minimal non-relation that “among” implies through several textual moments and draws out the implications for thinking about poetry and politics, beginning with the opening paragraphs from The Declaration of Independence. To think the politics of “among” further the chapter turns to two famous poems by P. B. Shelley (“Hymn to Intellectual Beauty” and “Ode to the West Wind”) where Shelley teases out the incompatibility of “being among,” as a grammatical relationship, and tropes of address like apostrophe. “Hymn” moves from a conspicuous appearance of the preposition “among” to a figure of apostrophe while “Ode” moves from apostrophe to another conspicuous use of “among.” The chiasmus raises a question of pressing importance to Shelley (and modern democracy): can one be among others and address them at the same time? The chapter then turns to Shelley's unfinished poem The Triumph of Life, which similarly raises questions about prepositions and political speech." @default.
