- W4317814872 abstract "Chilling is one of the most significant abiotic stresses that negatively affect plant growth and development. In order to investigate the effect of short-term and prolonged cold night stress on Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni, the antioxidative response in leaves after 3, 6, 9 and 12 h as well as after two and three nights of artificial low night temperature (4 °C) treatment and subsequent recovery was investigated. Night chilling temperature initially caused an increase in H2O2 concentration which coincided with the changes in the CAT and GPOD activity. A further increase in GPOD activity as well as an increase in the concentration of total phenolics and total antioxidative activity was observed after longer exposure to low temperatures. Despite the ability of stevia plants to quickly respond to low temperature exposure by activating antioxidative defense mechanisms, oxidative stress was not prevented after prolonged night chilling as indicated by the increased concentration of products of lipid peroxidation (TBARS). Obtained results indicate that night chilling could present a significant impediment to stevia production. Detailed knowledge on the response of stevia plants to chilling could contribute to the development of most successive strategies for its production in the areas outside of its native range where frequent exposure to suboptimal night temperature occurs." @default.
