• W4318260206 abstract "Proteomics is an interdisciplinary area between biochemistry and informatics, which encompasses different analytical technologies to characterize (qualitatively and quantitatively) a set of total proteins in different samples, with mass spectrometry (MS) being the indispensable strategy for such studies that allow interpreting information encoded by genes, that is, the proteome. Its main task is to quantify each protein in a sample relative to other samples, or in absolute terms. Currently, however, cover data-dependent methods, as the selection of peptide fragments for further MS/MS analysis depends on preestablished criteria, and others independent of them, where all peptides, within a mass range predetermined, are indiscriminately fragmented, analyzing all species present in a specific sample at once at detectable concentrations, and the data can be analyzed together in retrospect as improved software and in silico databases become accessible. Proteomics alone or combined with other omics, for example, facilitates access to information from complex microbial communities important for effective bioremediation processes. By studying proteins and their regulation, now it is possible to understand how some saprophytic microbes adapted to the lethal presence of some pollutants and can even degrade them. This chapter discusses the advances and limitations of proteomic studies carried out over the last 20 years to assist microbiological monitoring in sectors of environmental treatment, as well new concepts in this growing area." @default.
