- W4318305705 abstract "A growing number of environmental awareness in consumers have recognized that the harmfulness to the environment from disposing of synthetic products is noticeably greater than those accumulated from biodegradable products. Natural fibers are recognized as a perfect alternative to synthetics and have the advantage of environmentally friendly processing technologies and production. Fibers have their own particular strengths in their end products. All the benefits of natural fibers are increasingly recognized as an alternate sustainable choice. The most feasible way for eco-composite materials is the use of natural fibers as reinforcement. The major drawbacks of using cellulosic/natural fibers as reinforcement in composites are high water absorption and poor interaction between hydrophilic fiber and hydrophobic matrix. The physical and mechanical properties of natural fibers-reinforced composites (NFRC) are highly dependent on the fiber/matrix interaction. The main objective of this chapter is to summarize the effect of water absorption and mechanical properties of NFRCs through appropriate chemical treatments including alkaline (or) mercerization, silane, permanganate, benzoylation, peroxide, maleated anhydride (MA), acrylation, and acetylation." @default.
