We begin by considering the difference between laminar and turbulent flow, and the different types of flow we will see when liquid and gas phases are flowing within the one pipe. A section of the chapter is devoted to pipes and the different types of valves found in processing plants. Examples illustrate how to calculate the pressure drop in simple pipes, and Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids, flow under a pressure driving force, and more complex pipe runs that contain valves and other fittings.
