- W4319067803 abstract "Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most common cancers worldwide, with over 80% of the CRC cases associated with environmental factors, including diet. Procyanidins (PC), oligomers of flavan-3-ols, are abundant in the human diet. This review discusses current evidence on the anticancer effects of PC in CRC, and the associated cellular mechanisms. Extensive data indicate that PC have anti-CRC effects in multiple rodent models. However, evidence from human studies is currently conflicting, with several case-control studies showing an inverse relationship between PC-rich food consumption and the risk of developing CRC. Mechanistically, PC can target receptor tyrosine kinases, prevent inflammatory cascade activation, and inhibit redox-regulated signals. In summary, although some clinical evidence is supportive of the anti-CRC effects of PC, we recommend that future human trials should include well-characterized biomarkers for accurate determination of dietary PC intake. This will enhance the study rigor and improve our knowledge on the impact of PC on CRC." @default.
