- W4319456910 abstract "Gastrointestinal (GI) complications following cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) in cardiac surgery are relatively uncommon and range in incidence from around 0.4%–2.9%. However, these conditions confer great mortality and morbidity rates (3%–87% respectively). These complications range from the most common, GI bleeding, to fulminant ischemic colitis and can therefore present as an array of symptoms, owing to difficulty and delays in diagnosis. Although modern advances in both knowledge and CPB technology have contributed to a reduction in adverse outcomes in cardiac surgery, complications may still occur. Various departments across the world advocate the use of risk-stratification techniques to minimize the likelihood of these outcomes occurring with emphasis placed on the identification of individual pre- and postoperative factors that may contribute. This chapter aims to provide current knowledge surrounding the pathophysiology of these conditions, with detail on the equipment and policies used by hospitals on an international scale. Further information regarding future developments is also offered, with explanation about how hospitals should navigate the future use of CPB." @default.
