- W4319458052 abstract "The array sensing mimics the mammalian gustatory/olfactory principle in which all responses collected from nonspecific receptors (i.e., cross-reactive or semi-selective recognition elements) represent a fingerprint-like pattern for each test/odor. Generally, three steps must be taken to develop a sensor array: (1) selection and design of sensor elements (recognition elements) which is the key step in sensor array design. (2) Selection of a data acquisition method to record signals from the interaction of sensor elements with the analytes. (3) Selection of a method/a few methods to analyze the collected multivariate data, illustrate the discrimination among analytes, and identify the unknown analyte(s). The concept of these steps will be covered in the first section of the chapter. Optical sensor arrays can be designed by different kinds of chemoresponsive dyes and nanomaterials which have found extensive applications, however, they are beyond the topic of this chapter. In this chapter, we will particularly focus on the application of gold and silver nanoparticles (NPs)/nanoclusters (NCs)-based sensor arrays. Gold and silver NPs and NCs are promising sensing elements in sensor array design owing to their physicochemical properties, chemical functionalization, and color visualization. In this chapter, we will describe colorimetric, luminescent (fluorescence and chemiluminescence), and multi-channel sensor arrays, in which gold NPs (AuNPs), silver NPs (AgNPs), gold NCs (AuNCs), and silver NCs (AgNCs) are employed as fundamental materials to design cross-reactive recognition elements. We will highlight the sensing mechanisms while discussing the diverse applications of gold and silver NPs/NCs-based sensor arrays." @default.
