- W4319458506 abstract "Mountains cover approximately one-fifth of the total land area of the Earth and are home to nearly half a billion people. Because the potential for industrialization is limited in hilly areas, mountain people rely primarily on agriculture for a living. However, food scarcity has long been a problem in these areas as soil quality has deteriorated. The decline is caused by two factors: (1) erosional losses of soil nutrients from steep slopes during rainstorms, and (2) a decrease in soil organic carbon as a result of less biomass input to the soil. Soil amendments such as farmyard manure, compost, and chemical fertilizers are common. These, however, are not sustainable because they are labor intensive, require regular application, and emit large amounts of greenhouse gases. Biochar can be a more long-lasting and sustainable alternative. Nutrients and microorganisms play critical roles in soil fertility. As a result, it is critical to investigate the effects of biochar application on them." @default.
