- W4319458509 abstract "Reactive oxygen species (ROS) cause various diseases and disorders in livestock. These diseases and disorders tend to appear in the cells of reproductive organs such as the ovary and uterus. Consequently, ROS may cause reproductive disorders in cows and pigs. Moreover, animals, including human beings, need oxygen to create energy in their bodies. In the process of metabolism, some of (triplet) molecular oxygen (3O2) is converted into ROS, such as hydroxyl radical (•OH), singlet oxygen (1O2), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), and superoxide (O2−). Under normal conditions, they are rapidly removed by the antioxidant mechanism of the body or by metalloenzymes, such as superoxide dismutases (SODs), which catalyze to remove O2−, which is one of the ROS. In this chapter, we first introduce the correlation between oxidative stress and the health of livestock. Subsequently, we discuss ROS, which cause serious oxidative damage to biomolecules, such as lipids, sugars, hormones, proteins, neurons, and nucleic acids. We then focus on the function and reaction mechanisms of SODs. Finally, we suggest guidelines to design metal complexes of small molecules, which possess antioxidant activity." @default.
