- W4319460084 abstract "Rapid population growth and uncontrolled urbanization in the last few decades are creating today serious environmental and economic challenges, key among them being solid waste management. Food waste constitutes a large portion of the municipal solid waste stream, and today, most of that waste is disposed of in landfills, or it is incinerated. Food waste deposited in landfills produces landfill gas (LFG) via biodegradation, which is a mixture of methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2), both are classified as potent greenhouse gases (GHGs). In many landfills, particularly in the industrialized world, the LFG is collected and used for power generation. In many other instances, however, it is simply flared or in landfills, without proper LFG collection systems installed, ends up as fugitive CH4/CO2 emissions. Either way, every year landfills release a huge amount of GHGs and other harmful substances into the atmosphere, and as a result, they are considered to be among the key contributors to global warming. The most preferred method of food waste management would be to control and reduce its generation at the source, i.e., at the production and consumer level, but such a strategy has, so far, proven quite elusive. It is, therefore, critically important to find beneficial uses of such food waste postgeneration and before it ends up being dumped into a landfill. One solution that is receiving a significant share of attention today is turning food waste biomass into energy, and this is the primary focus of this chapter, which provides a concise overview, including key references, on current worldwide efforts for food waste beneficiation." @default.
