Additionally, ionic liquids for oil recovery exhibit higher stability than surfactants under harsh reservoir conditions. Therefore, the researchers are paying attention to ionic liquids for application in the petroleum domain. Several laboratory investigations have already proved that some ionic liquids demand recognition as “green solvents” in the oil and gas industry due to their eco-friendly nature. However, many ionic liquids show high toxicity levels and no biodegradability property. This chapter offers insights into the unique properties of ionic liquids with their promising applications in improved oil extraction considering reduction of interfacial tension up to a favorable range for trapped oil recovery, change of oil-wet to the water-wet reservoir rock surface, reduction of chemical retention onto a rock surface, microemulsion phase behavior, and pros and cons of using ionic liquids. The effectiveness of ionic liquids is significant for the recovery of residual wedged oil remains after water injection in core displacement experiments due to changes in wettability and a decrease in interfacial tension. Imidazolium-based ionic liquids have been extensively used in oil extraction method for additional recovery. Ionic liquids can achieve low interfacial tension (10−2 mN/m). Additional oil recovery of up to 15% of total oil can be achieved after secondary method due to the surface-active nature and flexible structures. This chapter has also considered the future prospect of using ionic liquids in enhanced oil recovery, emphasizing synthesized surface-active ionic liquids." @default.
